Diagnostic Imaging Services shares a news report that says cognitive impairment following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common, often adversely affecting quality of life for those 1.7 million Americans who experience a TBI each year.

A study recently published in the Journal of International Neuropsychological Society found that individuals who are at least six months post-injury exhibit between-network, long-range and inter-hemispheric connectivity disruptions. This is the first study of its kind to show the inter-correlations among different networks and disruptions among them in individuals with TBI.

Often times, TBI is an invisible injury that is nearly impossible to diagnose with conventional imaging studies such as Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Fortunately, Capitol Imaging Services perform specialty studies that offer the opportunity to turn the invisible TBI injury visible.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Whether the victim is an adult, a child, or an infant, TBIs can have a major impact on individuals and their families. Fortunately, there is hope and there is action that can be taken when common anatomical imaging tests and therapies have had little results.

Brain injury is unpredictable in its consequences. Brain injury affects who we are, the way we think, act, and feel. It can change everything about us in a matter of seconds. A person with a brain injury is a person first. No two brain injuries are exactly the same. The effects of a brain injury are complex and vary greatly from person to person. And, the effects of a brain injury depend on such factors as cause, location, and severity.
