Providing screening heel ultrasound tests was the reason Diagnostic Imaging Services was on hand at the “Healthy, Wealthy and Wise” family fair on August 17, 2013. We met many fine people who brought their families to gather information on a variety of services, from health to dental to financial.
DIS brought our portable heel ultrasound unit in order to screen people about possible indications of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Osteopenia refers to bone mineral density (BMD) that is lower than normal peak BMD but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone
While our portable test is not a replacement for a DEXA bone density study, which is done at all DIS locations, it does allow us to go out into the community to screen people at events such as health fairs. We provide a short report on the results, explaining what the information means and provide a brochure on the test itself.
DEXA bone density, along with mammography and ultrasound, are part of the DIS comprehensive women’s imaging services, which also include specialty services such as breast MRI, breast biopsy and cyst aspiration.
