Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an emerging modality in lung cancer staging. It allows for combination of functional and anatomic assessment of lesions, especially useful in detecting nodal involvement or metastatic spread. Tumor cells have a higher than normal metabolism, detect on PET by their increased glucose uptake, which makes PET an excellent modality to classify indeterminate lesions, thus reducing the rate of unnecessary biopsies.

Combined PET/CT machines are a new area of research that allow for the functional metabolic discrimination of PET to be overlaid on high-resolution CT scans. Early research shows that TNM (Tumor, Nodes and Metastases) staging is more accurate with PET/CT machines than with CT alone. PET alone, or visual correlation between PET and CT. Although not widespread, combined PET/CT has the potential to be invaluable in staging and therapeutic planning.

In some instances, PET is limited by availability and expertise.  However, Capitol Imaging Services has been providing PET/CT examinations for several years.  We are accredited by the American College of Radiology, meeting or exceeding standards set for quality and safety. Patients are always encouraged to utilize an imaging center that has been designated with such an accreditation.

Capitol Imaging Services is the largest independent radiology practice of its type serving the southeastern United States. Not only do we perform the scan such as as a PET/CT or MRI, we also provide the radiology expertise to review test images and issue important findings to physicians and other healthcare providers.

PET/CT studies are performed at three Capitol Imaging Services facilities:

  • Louisiana PET/CT Imaging of Lake Charles in Lake Charles, LA
  • Louisiana PET/CT Imaging of Alexandria in Alexandria, LA
  • Texarkana PET/CT Imaging Institute in Texarkana, TX
