Claustrophobia is a disorder characterized by the marked, persistent and excessive fear of enclosed spaces. In such affected individuals, exposure to an enclosed space such as that found with certain MRI systems, almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response that in it’s most extreme form is indistinguishable from the panic attack described above.
Open MRIs were initially designed for claustrophobic and overweight patients. Open MRI machines represent about 25% of the the total number of MRI machines installed in the U.S. Over the last several years, open MRI technology has rapidly advanced and newer open MRI machines are capable of capturing the same high resolution pictures as their closed (tube) counterparts.
Open MRI has been a very positive advancement for imaging children. Bariatric and obese people also now have a solution should they need an MRI. The DIS Oasis System has successfully scanned a person who weighed 700 pounds.
