A Capitol Imaging Services network affiliate, Diagnostic Imaging Services (DIS), offers three different options for undergoing a breast biopsy. These options are best determined by a qualified medical provider and often a consultation with a women’s health radiologist.

The three options are:

  • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy
  • MRI-guided breast biopsy

What are the biopsy differences?

Image-guided biopsy is performed when the abnormal area in the breast is too small to be felt, making it difficult to locate the lesion by feel (called palpation). In ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, ultrasound imaging is used to help guide the radiologist’s instrument to the site of the abnormal growth. Stereotactic breast biopsy uses mammography to help locate a breast lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. Magnetic Resonance- or MR-guided breast biopsy uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to help locate a breast lump or abnormality and guide a needle to remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. Diagnostic Imaging Services is the only outpatient provider in southeast Louisiana to offer these three different types of breast biopsy. These services are an important part of our women’s health imaging portfolio.

DIS also a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, meeting or exceeding the requirements from the American College of Radiology for testing quality, reporting, medical expertise and technology. Women are often encouraged to seek out and utilize a center with this type of designation, which signals a strong commitment to screening and diagnosing cancer at its earliest stage.
