According to many resources, most any private time is the perfect time for women to check their breasts for any changes in size, symmetry or color. We probably would not recommend it while frying bacon or a vegetable stir fry, but plenty of other times in the comfort of your home are opportunities to self-check.

So, put that good novel done for a moment, turn down the sound on the TV while watching a Hallmark movie or take a minute or two while getting dressed or undressed and take the time you’ll need to check.

Better yet, do your check while taking a shower or bath.

Why check?

Why not? More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before and the earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance for successful treatment. That’s why it’s important to check your breasts and go to your doctor or medical provider if you spot anything unusual. You won’t be wasting their time or yours, even if turns out not to be serious.

What are you looking for?

Here are some recommendations as to what to look and feel for, including:

  • the shape or size of your breast – e.g. one breast might become larger than the other;
  • skin texture – this might be puckering or dimpling to the skin of the breast;
  • the color of your breast – the breast may look red or inflamed
  • change in nipples – e.g. one nipple might become inverted (turned in) when it normally points out;
  • nipple discharge – any unusual discharge from either nipple;
  • rash or crusting – rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area;
  • a lump or swelling in your armpit, upper chest or breast – you might be able to feel a lump, but not see it.

Once a month, ladies, give yourself a thorough check. Make it part of your health routine.
