Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a special type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam that produces detailed images of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct.
Physicians use MRCP to:
- examine diseases of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and pancreatic duct, including tumors, stones, inflammation or infection
- evaluate patients with pancreatitis to detect the underlying cause
- help to diagnose unexplained abdominal pain
- provide a less invasive alternative to endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
ERCP is a diagnostic procedure that combines endoscopy, which uses an illuminated optical instrument to examine inside the body, with iodinated contrast injection and x-ray images. MRCP is often performed in conjunction with an MRI of the abdomen. The entire procedure typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
MRCP is an exam performed at several Capitol Imaging Services locations. As with all MRI exams, there is no medical radiation used in order to acquire images for the radiologist and your doctor. At Capitol Imaging Services, we employ a wide range of MRI systems, including 3T high field MRI, 1.5T high field MRI and Open MRI.
Capitol Imaging Services is the largest independent radiology practice of its type serving the Southeastern United States. Not only do we perform the scan, such as an MRI, we also provide the radiology expertise to review test images and issue critical findings to physicians and other health care providers.
We also often reduce out of pocket costs for people by performing exams at lower fees. For people with unfulfilled health insurance deductibles, that’s a major financial advantage. And, this advantage is enjoyed without sacrificing the quality of care, imaging technology or results reporting.
