Neurological Testing

Supporting the Diagnosis of Nerve and Muscle Conditions

Capitol Imaging Services offers neurological studies to help evaluate how nerves and muscles function throughout the body. These diagnostic procedures are commonly ordered by neurologists, pain management specialists, orthopedic physicians, and primary care providers to investigate symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or chronic pain.

Neurological studies play an essential role in identifying a wide range of conditions that affect the nervous system, including nerve damage, muscle disorders, and neuromuscular dysfunction. These studies are non-surgical and typically performed in an outpatient setting.

Types of Neurological Studies We Offer

At select Capitol Imaging Services locations, we provide two primary types of neurological studies:

Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

An NCS measures how quickly and efficiently electrical signals travel through your peripheral nerves. It is often used to evaluate conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and nerve compression. Small electrodes are placed on the skin to stimulate the nerve and record the response.

Electromyography (EMG)

An EMG records the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during movement. It helps diagnose muscle disorders, motor neuron diseases, and conditions such as radiculopathy. The test is performed using a fine needle electrode inserted into the muscle tissue to monitor activity.

Why Are Neurological Studies Ordered?

Your provider may order a neurological study if you're experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Persistent numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness or cramping
  • Radiating pain in the arms or legs
  • Suspected nerve or muscle injury
  • Unexplained changes in mobility or coordination

These studies help your care team identify the source of your symptoms and guide treatment decisions. In many cases, NCS and EMG are used together to provide a more complete picture of how your nerves and muscles are functioning.
