The post headline comes from a September 30, 2016 article posted on www.dotmed.com. The article describes the radiologists in the Chicago, Illinois area looking for a better alternative to more risky Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) exams using a contrast dye.
In southeast Louisiana, that solution has been here for a number of years.
Angiography is an imaging test that uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI or MR for short) to evaluate blood vessels and help spot arterial disease and abnormalities. Angiography exams without a contrast dye require less time that an exam involving contrast — and they are much safer for people with kidney disease or are diabetics.
According to a radiologist at Cook County Health and Hospital System, these techniques answer the physician’s clinical question with the bonus of utilizing the option of repeating the imaging without using contrast. Also highlighted in the article was a “downside” to MRA was a requirement for extensive training and that it should be performed at hospitals with extensive technical skills.
