SPECT Scan
A SPECT scan - Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography - is an advanced nuclear medicine imaging exam that shows how organs and tissues are functioning rather than simply how they look. By combining a small amount of radioactive tracer with specialized gamma camera technology, a SPECT scan produces detailed three-dimensional images that help physicians evaluate blood flow, tissue activity, and organ function.
Unlike traditional X-rays or CT scans, which primarily reveal anatomical structures, SPECT imaging provides functional information that can identify disease before structural changes become visible. This makes SPECT an important diagnostic tool for evaluating a variety of neurological, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal conditions.
When would I get a SPECT Scan?
Your healthcare provider may recommend a SPECT scan to diagnose, evaluate, or monitor conditions that affect blood flow or organ function. Common reasons for a SPECT examination include:
- Heart disease and reduced blood flow to the heart muscle
- Coronary artery disease
- Bone disorders and hidden fractures
- Cancer that has spread to the bones
- Seizures and epilepsy
- Dementia and memory disorders
- Head injuries
- Certain neurological disorders affecting brain function
Because SPECT imaging measures how tissues function, it often provides valuable information that complements MRI, CT, or standard X-ray examinations. Your physician may use the results to confirm a diagnosis, monitor disease progression, or evaluate how well a treatment is working.
What Will I Experience During a SPECT Scan?
Before your examination begins, one of our nuclear medicine technologists will review your medical history, explain the procedure, and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the type of SPECT study being performed, a small amount of radiopharmaceutical (radioactive tracer) will usually be administered through an intravenous (IV) injection. Certain studies may require the tracer to be swallowed or inhaled.
After the tracer is administered, there is often a waiting period that allows it to travel through your bloodstream and concentrate in the area being evaluated. The length of this uptake period varies depending on the specific exam and may range from several minutes to a few hours.
When it is time for imaging, you will lie comfortably on a padded examination table while a specialized gamma camera slowly rotates around the part of your body being studied. The scanner does not completely enclose your body, and the procedure is painless. Remaining as still as possible during image acquisition helps produce the clearest diagnostic images.
Most SPECT imaging examinations take approximately 30 minutes, although the total appointment time may be longer because of the tracer uptake period. Once your examination is complete, you'll typically be encouraged to drink extra fluids throughout the day to help your body naturally eliminate the tracer. Normal activities can usually be resumed immediately unless your physician provides other instructions.
