Because the prostate is a small organ located deep in the pelvis, traditional imaging methods have not been very successful in detecting prostate cancer. However, utilizing new generation 3T MRI scanners and special parameters with interpretation of images by an experienced radiologist, greater than 97% accuracy can now be achieved in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer or excluding significant cancer.

At our Capitol Imaging Services affiliate, Diagnostic Imaging Services (DIS), 3T ultra-high field MRI scanners with special protocols and Computer Aided Detection software (CAD) are used for what we call multiparametric (MP) prostate studies. All exams are interpreted by a radiology team which individually reads each study and then comes together collectively to issue one comprehensive report for the doctor.

  • Superior technology
  • An academic approach to interpretation

You won’t find this type of approach anywhere in Louisiana or the Gulf South.

One question that may be asked is, “Is MP 3T MRI right for you?”

If you have an elevated PSA and/or a positive Digital Rectal Exam, a MP 3T MRI may be the next step before a biopsy. Alternatively, after eight weeks or more following a negative TRUS-guided biopsy.

Certain high risk individuals for prostate cancer with normal PSA values would benefit by MP 3T MRI.  If active surveillance is being considered, MP 3T MRI is suggested as in initial evaluation or as a follow-up in men already in active surveillance.  If a man has a rising PSA post prostatectomy, radiation, or other treatment, MP 3T MRI is useful in detecting recurrent disease.

The MP 3T MRI is useful for pre-operative staging and treatment planning. It can determine tumor location. It evaluates extra-prostatic disease such as extracapsular extension, seminal vesicle invasion or bladder involvement. It also determines if there are metastases in the lymph nodes or bones.

DIS performs prostate 3T MRI with CAD at their Metairie and Slidell, LA centers. Click here to learn more about our study and the advantages we provide to men and their physicians.
