August 12, 2013 (Metairie, La.) – A new cutting-edge prostate digital imaging system has been

incorporated with a leading-edge 3 Tesla (3T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system at a freestanding independent outpatient imaging center in Metairie, LA.

The result? The creation of an advanced prostate MRI program that is truly unique to the greater New Orleans area, state of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

Through the Invivo DynaCAD digital imaging system, Diagnostic Imaging Services (DIS) now incorporates advanced image analysis technology for prostate MRI examinations that give physicians and radiologists more information to aid in diagnostic assessment of the prostate gland.

“Physicians have traditionally used the PSA blood test to screen for prostate cancer. However, this commonly used diagnostic test can sometimes produce unclear results,” said Michael Holmes, Chief Executive Officer of DIS. “DynaCAD allows clinicians to see what is happening inside the prostate without requiring invasive procedures. Using this software tool in conjunction with MRI allows our staff of radiologists to more accurately detect cancer and can assist physicians in making treatment decisions, while potentially minimizing the number of prostate biopsies a man may require,” said Holmes.

Because visualizing cancer within the prostate can be difficult due to the prostate gland being small and found deep inside the body, DynaCAD produces vivid images that are generated by the movement of a contrast agent through the prostate over time. The software “lights up” areas of the prostate that have abnormal blood flow, which can be caused by leaky blood vessels that are typically found in cancer.

Images created by the DynaCAD system, along with additional clinical information, can assist physicians and radiologists in determining which tumors may be malignant and can help pinpoint tumor location and size.

MRI is an emerging tool for early detection of prostate cancer and other prostate-related conditions. Through the use of radio frequency waves, detailed cross-sectional images of the prostate and surrounding tissues are created. DynaCAD is utilized in post exam processing to develop images that may show specific, suspicious areas within the prostate.

To complete the DIS prostate MRI program, a specialized prostate imaging group from the radiology staff at Reliant Radiology, comprised of leading board-certified radiologists, will examine the images using DynaCAD to identify areas in the prostate gland that look suspicious, may require further evaluation, and possibly, biopsy by a urologist.

“DIS is the only imaging provider in Louisiana offering prostate 3T ultra high field MRI with Invivo DynaCAD,” said Holmes. “We are the first and only imaging center to combine conventional MRI with what is known as ‘multiparametric’ prostate imaging to better detect and stage prostate cancer,” he added.

MRI has been cited as holding “tremendous potential” to finally help distinguish men with non-aggressive cancer who do not need treatment from those with aggressive disease who do. With the challenge being to try to find all prostate cancer — but treat only that cancer which is aggressive – no other imaging technique is considered as good as MRI for depicting the prostate and surrounding tissues and detecting cancer within the prostate.

Prostate 3T MRI is performed at the DIS Women’s & Advanced Imaging Center in Metairie, located at 4241 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Suite 100. The center is located in the Independence Mall, behind Houston’s restaurant and across from Sake Café.
