This is an inquiry Capitol Imaging Services associates and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologists get asked frequently. We thought we would provide a brief answer.
Center of the MRI
The part of the body that is scanned must be in the center of the scanner tunnel. If the body part being scanned is from the waist down, you will be placed in the tunnel feet first. If the body part being scanned is from the waist up, you will be placed in the tunnel head first.
So, for imaging areas such as the knee, ankle and foot, you go in feet first and most people will have their head outside of a traditional closed scanner.
For areas being imaged such as the head, neck, breast and abdominal area, you go in head first. Depending upon the type of exam being performed, the scanner table may move to re-position you so that the area for imaging is again in the center of the scanner. Being in the center is a critical component to any quality MRI study.
MRI comfort is important
No matter the type of exam, rest assured our technologists will take good care of you as they understand that an MRI can often produce anxiety, nervousness or fear. We will do everything we can to make you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
Capitol Imaging Services offers multiple locations throughout the Gulf South that perform MRI studies. Some of these locations offer the power of 3T ultra high field MRI, which is often demanded by medical subspecialists such as urologists, orthopedic surgeons and neurologists. Others offer open MRI which works very well for patients who may experience anxiety or nervousness about their exam. We are confident we can offer the solution that best fits your and your physician’s needs.
