The Top Exams to Schedule Before Your Deductible Resets
As the end of the year approaches, many people take advantage of their met deductibles by completing medical imaging exams their providers recommended earlier in the year. Once January arrives and insurance deductibles reset, out-of-pocket costs often increase. Scheduling necessary studies now can be both medically beneficial and financially smart. Below are three of the most common imaging studies people choose to schedule before their deductibles reset, especially if their healthcare provider has already suggested them earlier in the year.

Screening or Diagnostic Mammogram

If you are due for an annual screening mammogram, or if your provider recommended a diagnostic mammogram to follow up on a previous exam, year-end is an ideal time to get it done. Mammograms remain one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when treatment options and outcomes are most favorable. Completing this exam before your deductible renews can significantly reduce your cost, especially if you have already met most of your yearly insurance requirements.

CT, MRI or PET/CT can Ordered Earlier in the Year

Advanced imaging such as CT or MRI is often postponed because these exams can be more expensive than routine tests. Yet they play a vital role in diagnosing orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, abdominal symptoms, chronic pain, and cancer-related concerns. If your provider ordered a CT, PET/CT or MRI several months ago and you have not yet scheduled it, completing it before your deductible resets may be the most cost-effective time to do so.

Ultrasound for Ongoing or Unresolved Issues

Ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate abdominal and gallbladder pain, pelvic symptoms, thyroid nodules, and vascular concerns. When an ultrasound has been recommended during the year, delaying it can prolong symptoms or leave important questions unanswered. Completing this exam before your deductible refreshes can lower immediate out-of-pocket expenses and help your care team make timely decisions.

Additional Studies to Consider

Depending on your age, risk factors, or previous recommendations from your provider, other exams may be appropriate. These can include DEXA scans for bone density, low-dose CT lung screening for eligible current or former smokers, and coronary calcium scoring to assess cardiovascular risk. If any of these were suggested earlier in the year, now is an ideal time to complete them.
